Q: Does working out cause acne ?
A: Yes, working out can contribute to various factors that can cause acne. But there are ways of preventing acne too.

Causes of Acne

Acne is caused when hair follicles or skin pores are clogged with dead skin cells. This causes sebum or hair lubricating  oil to be trapped in the pores.

So how does working out cause acne ?

Research has shown that whenever you workout your testosterone level rises.

Testosterone reacts with an enzyme 5a reductase to convert testosterone into DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) which is responsible for the sebum secretion.

Also when you sweat  a yeast called Mallassezia can clog the pores and causes acne.


  • Always keep a napkin handy and try to keep your skin dry throughout your workout.
  • Avoid wearing tight clothes. Tight clothes causes a lot of friction which is a precursor for acne.
  • After your workout have a bath instantly so that you dont allow the skin pores to be clogged with dead cells and sebum.
